Adger family papers, 1796-1893.

Papers consist of correspondence, estate and financial records, and other items. Family correspondence (1796-1893) of James Adger, Sarah E. Adger, Margaret Milligan Adger Smyth, Thomas Smyth, Jane A. Adger, and others concerns family matters, business concerns, travels, an 1836 shipwreck near Cape Hatteras (N.C.), affairs of the Second Presbyterian Church (Charleston, S.C.), and other matters. Other items include clippings, a lottery ticket (1809), a lease (1866), a printed copy of the will (1849) of William Bones, and pamphlets (1879) and legal documents pertaining to the bankruptcy of James Adger & Co. Papers (1850-1897) of James Adger (1777-1858) and other family members chiefly consist of financial records including receipt books (1850-1897), many of which pertain to the estate of James Adger (1777-1858); a cashbook (1875-1886) for groceries and other expenses; William Adger's receipt book (1852-1892) for general sundries and the estate of James Adger (1777-1858); a receipt book (1859-1860) of Robert Adger; Margaret Milligan Adger Smyth's accounts (1850-1860) with James Adger & Co. and her receipts (1879-1888) for personal expenses; trustee accounts (1850-1876) of Robert Adger and William Adger; and accounts of Jane A. Adger and Susan D. Adger with James Adger & Co. John Bailey Adger correspondence (1830-1845) includes letters between John Bailey Adger at Princeton Theological Seminary and his fiancee (later his wife) Elizabeth K. Shrewsbury regarding personal, family, and religious matters; and a letterpress copybook containing tissue copies of Adger's letters from Smyrna (Turkey) to his brother-in-law Thomas Smyth and other clergymen concerning family and religious matters, linguistics, his missionary work, the Near East, and other topics.
